During my many years in the military I was blessed to have got to know many brave men and women who loved their families, friends and their country. I'd like to share with you one of these men who I knew personally, his name was Marco Miller. Marco was a brilliant young soldier who was a family man, entrepreneur, and dedicated American who was called to serve alongside many of us in Iraq, beginning in the summer of 2006.
Like everyone else training up for our deployment, he accepted the risks of potential death in war, but down in our hearts we truly felt we would all come back home to our loved ones eventually. Not so for dear Marco. While sitting at the very same checkpoint I had sat myself several times previously, a barrage of incoming mortar rounds landed near my friend and his time on earth ended that very day.
Our unit was shaken as we mourned the loss of our fellow soldier, but our mission continued on. Heroes are plentiful in a war zone and Marco was one of them, as he laid his life down SO WE CAN LIVE OURS.
Please remember Marco and the hundreds of thousands of other brave souls who gave up their lives for our freedoms, on this Memorial Day.
As Reverend Billy Graham put it "Even though the sacrifices of our war dead have been great, yet the greatest sacrifice of all time was made by a man on a cross who died not only physically but spiritually that men might live. We have neglected Him too long! We have rejected His plan for peace and as a result, we have fought, bled and died for centuries."
Today as we grill out, picnic and enjoy the freedoms provided us by the blood of others let us REMEMBER, and never forget! Remember Marco, and the many Gold Star families who live on daily without their loved ones.
